Tampa blanks Stars, wins 2nd Stanley Cup

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) The joyful yells from the bench could be heard in the empty arena in the final seconds and the roar from players when Commissioner Gary Bettman called for Steven Stamkos to accept the Stanley Cup echoed even louder.

The triumph of winning the NHL championship in a bubble was certainly no less sweet for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Brayden Point scored his playoff-best 14th goal and the Lightning beat the Dallas Stars 2-0 in Game 6 on Monday night to win finish off the most unusual NHL postseason in history, staged nearly entirely in quarantine because of the pandemic.

Lightning D Hedman wins Conn Smythe

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) When the Tampa Bay Lightning were still in Toronto, they enjoyed some fresh air outside at the football stadium inside the bubble.

Victor Hedman kicked and made a 50-yard field goal, soccer style, perfectly splitting the uprights.

Veteran Stars stumble at finish line

All those wily, old veterans couldn't get the Dallas Stars another Stanley Cup championship.

Rick Bowness is the 65-year-old interim head coach who has been behind NHL benches in parts of five different decades. Joe Pavelski and Corey Perry are the veteran forwards in their mid-30s who spent their entire careers with their original teams before signing with Dallas in free agency last summer just for this chance.

Maroon goes back-to-back with 2 teams

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) Patrick Maroon didn't get the chance this time to lower the Stanley Cup so that his son, Anthony, could kiss it before lifting it again over his shoulders.

Anthony stayed home in the U.S., as did fiancee Francesca as Maroon celebrated with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday night as he became a back-to-back NHL champion. A year ago on the ice in Boston, the St. Louis native won the Cup with the Blues, his family by his side.

Blackhawks acquire F Pirri from Vegas

CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago Blackhawks acquired Brandon Pirri in a trade with the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday, reuniting the forward with his first NHL team.

The Blackhawks sent Dylan Sikura to Vegas for the 29-year-old Pirri, who split last season between the Golden Knights and Chicago of the American Hockey League. The forward had two assists in 16 games with Vegas, and 15 goals and 20 assists in 38 games with Chicago.

Rangers trade D Staal, pick to Red Wings

DETROIT (AP) The Detroit Red Wings acquired defenseman Marc Staal and a second-round draft pick from the New York Rangers for future considerations Saturday.

The draft pick is in 2021. The 33-year-old Staal had two goals and nine assists in 52 games this past season. He has played his whole 13-season NHL career so far with the Rangers.

Habs sign D Petry to 4-year, $25M deal

MONTREAL (AP) The Montreal Canadiens on Friday signed defenseman Jeff Petry to a four-year extension at an average of $6.25 million a year.

The 32-year-old Petry had 40 points (11 goals, 29 assists) in 71 games last season. Petry was Montreal's hits leader and led all Canadiens defensemen in takeaways. He added two game-winning goals and an assist in 10 playoff games.

Wings sign Gagner to 1-year extension

DETROIT (AP) The Detroit Red Wings signed forward Sam Gagner to a one-year contract extension Saturday.

The Red Wings acquired Gagner on Feb. 24 in a trade with Edmonton. He played six games for Detroit.

Senators put Ryan on waivers for buyout

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) Bobby Ryan was placed on waivers by the Ottawa Senators on Friday for the purpose of a buyout.

Ryan won the Masterton Trophy, the NHL's award for perseverance, on Sept. 7 after publicly sharing his battle with alcohol issues. The 33-year-old forward entered the NHL/NHL Players' Assistance program on Nov. 20 to get help for his addiction issues.
