Liverpool-Tottenham Hotspur Preview
Ange Postecoglou believes Saturday's meeting with Liverpool will help to measure the progress his new-look Tottenham side have made at the start of the Premier League season.
Spurs twice fought back from behind to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign with a 2-2 derby draw at Arsenal last Sunday.
They have scored two or more goals in each of their six league matches under Postecoglou – the only manager to see his team score multiple goals in his first seven games as a Premier League boss was Craig Shakespeare with Leicester City in 2017.
While Postecoglou expects a stern test against another unbeaten side, he is relishing the challenge.
"Can we impose our style of football against another top-class opponent who play differently to last week's opponent?," he asked. "The more we go through these tests, it gives us the belief to keep going down this road and accelerating the growth.
"We're at home, and we've had seven games so far and only two of those have been at home. It shows the resilience of the group that we've come through that with strong performances and results."
Liverpool, meanwhile, enter matchday seven two points adrift of leaders Manchester City, having taken 16 points from six games despite reshaping their entire midfield in a busy transfer window.
Boss Jurgen Klopp was asked if he was surprised by Liverpool's strong start.
"Yes, because I don't have timeframes for this kind of thing, the Premier League is the Premier League," he replied. "We called it a new start. This is year one for this team, I know these are only words, but we live it.
"We don't know how good we are, we don't know how stable it all is, but we all see that there are good moments in the games."
Tottenham – Son Heung-min
Having netted twice in last week's North London Derby, Son has scored five goals in his last three Premier League appearances, as many as in his previous 17 beforehand.
However, all five of those efforts have come away from home, with the Spurs forward goalless in his last four Premier League games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Will that run end here?
Liverpool – Darwin Nunez
On average, Liverpool duo Nunez and Mohamed Salah have created a chance for one another every 29 minutes while on the pitch together in the Premier League this season. That is the best ratio of any pair of team-mates to play 100 or more minutes together in 2023-24.
All four of Nunez's Premier League assists have been for Salah, and only seven players have ever previously seen their first five assists in the competition all fall for one team-mate.
Liverpool have had Tottenham's number in the Premier League of late, with Spurs only winning one of the teams' last 21 league meetings (six draws, 14 defeats), a 4-1 triumph at Wembley Stadium in 2017.
Tottenham are looking to start a Premier League season with a seven-match unbeaten run for just the third time, having done so in 2016-17 and 2022-23, but this represents their toughest assignment yet under Postecoglou.
Liverpool's current 17-game unbeaten run is the longest in the Premier League (12 wins, five draws), with only Manchester City (43) bettering their return of 41 points throughout that sequence.
