2nd horse based at Santa Anita dies leading up to Breeders' Cup

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) Geaux Rocket Ride was euthanized on Wednesday, four days after getting injured during a workout leading up to the Breeders’ Cup and struggling to recover after surgery.

The spate of racehorse deaths this year has Breeders' Cup under intense scrutiny

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) After horse deaths marred this year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness, and another occurred days ahead of the world championships, safety at the Breeders’ Cup is under intense scrutiny.

For the first time, all 14 Cup races this weekend at Santa Anita will be run under the sport’s new national uniform set of medication and safety rules. The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act, created by Congress under the oversight of the Federal Trade Commission, is charged with keeping horses and jockeys safe. (MORE)

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) A horse set to run in this weekend’s Breeders’ Cup died Tuesday at Santa Anita, and a short time later, Belmont Stakes winner Arcangelo dropped out of the $6 million Classic because of a foot issue.

Trainer Jena Antonucci said she ran out of time trying to resolve an issue with Arcangelo's left hind foot. The colt had not trained the last few days after having the shoe on that foot removed last weekend. (MORE)

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) Arabian Knight is the early 3-1 favorite for the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic this weekend at Santa Anita.

The two-day world championships drew 205 horses including 59 from five foreign countries to the track in Arcadia. Santa Anita is hosting for a record 11th time on the 40th anniversary of the event. (MORE)

Breeders' Cup Classic to pit Kentucky Derby and Belmont winners, with Bob Baffert entry, too

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) Kentucky Derby winner Mage and Belmont Stakes winner Arcangelo head a full field of 14 horses for the wide-open Breeders’ Cup Classic, with trainer Todd Pletcher pre-entering two for the $6 million race that includes horses from the barns of Bob Baffert and Rick Dutrow.

The Classic field was among the 205 horses, including 59 from overseas, pre-entered Wednesday for the over $31 million, 14-race world championships on Nov. 3-4 at Santa Anita. The track is hosting for a record 11th time on the event's 40th anniversary. (MORE)

Grand National to reduce number of horses to 34 and soften fences in bid to make famous race safer

(AP) -- The Grand National will reduce its field to 34 horses as part of a slew of significant changes, taking effect from next year, in an effort to make the world’s most famous steeplechase safer for horses and jockeys.

Other changes include softening the fences by using foam and rubber toe boards, and moving the first fence closer to the start to stop horses building up too much speed. (MORE)
